Pettigrew State Park~the fog lifts

Howdee all,

Remember the day It was so foggy on Lake Phelps that

I went Jewel hunting instead?

Before we arrived at the lake..we saw hundreds of snow geese in a farmers field.

It was foggy..

We arrived at the lake and it was foggy…

I went jewel hunting and since we couldn’t bird the lake we went on a bird hike through the park.

I think this is a Sycamore tree..

You could see right thru it!

Pocosin Lakes, Lake Phelps_007Upside down heart and funky roots~

Pocosin Lakes, Lake Phelps_042Another tree hollowed out..

it’s a wonder these trees are still standing!

Pocosin Lakes, Lake Phelps_045Our main mission to the park today was to scope out the campground to see if our Homey would fit. This is a much better location for birding the Pocosin Lakes NWR and surrounding area.

You can see below that the campground is not full..

( we are now here)

Pocosin Lakes, Lake Phelps_098The first part of the walk goes through

Somerset Place, a North Carolina state historic site that includes a restored 1830s plantation home and outbuildings that can be toured, including reconstructed slave quarters.

I think that this is also a Sycamore..Please correct me if I am wrong.

Pocosin Lakes, Lake Phelps_094A gorgeous tree!

The view from the plantation house looking toward the lake which is still foggy.

We continue our walk past various spider web structures.

We take the pathway to another part of Lake Phelps…maybe the fog has burned off by now..

Pocosin Lakes, Lake Phelps_084Boardwalk to the overlook..

this view is looking from the overlook back to the path we came in on.

Pocosin Lakes, Lake Phelps_081ahhhh…not as foggy as this morning.

We saw some ducks and Swans…but many too far to ID.

Pocosin Lakes, Lake Phelps_072We headed back to our car..

We counted at least ten Pileated Woodpeckers in the area.

Pocosin Lakes, Lake Phelps_087Signs of Sapsucker..

We did see Yellow-bellied Sapsucker

Pocosin Lakes, Lake Phelps_091

We went to the same pier I photographed this morning…what a difference!

Goose Creek State Park _023

Through the boggy wetlands.

Goose Creek State Park _021

I heard distant sounds…Sandhill Cranes?

if it was there were many of them. I didn’t think that there would be Sandhill Cranes here..but who knows.

Jeff didn’t think the sound was from birds..He thought it was more mechanical, maybe there are workers further up on the trail.

Goose Creek State Park _004

We walked on until we came to the area the sounds came from…

Goose Creek State Park _014

Not birds, Not planes or workers on the trail…but…

Ha ha…surprised we were…

Try as I might I could not get a photo of the frogs..or could I see much of them.

They jumped as soon as they saw us. Smallish in size..but many.

Anyone know what kind of frogs make this sound?

Goose Creek State Park _013We also saw this odd thing..

See the pine tree below with the dark green on it?

Goose Creek State Park _017Here's a close up..

what's up with this?

Goose Creek State Park _018We happened upon two deer munching greens in the bog

Goose Creek State Park _024Ohhh..look at the color on this tree

Goose Creek State Park _019And to end our lovely day..two hearts for you

Do you see them?

Goose Creek State Park _012Do you?

Pettigrew State Park

Pocosin Lakes, Lake Phelps_037

We heard the birds,Tundra Swan and ducks, but couldn’t see them…

Pocosin Lakes, Lake Phelps_010

The ranger told us earlier that the fog never burned off yesterday..

So our hopes were not high for birding the lake..

So, what's a gal to do when she cant bird?

I went Gem hunting…of course!

Pocosin Lakes, Lake Phelps_035

I found some little stud earrings

Pocosin Lakes, Lake Phelps_013with reflections of a boardwalk In them

Pocosin Lakes, Lake Phelps_020I found this lovely tiered necklace

Pocosin Lakes, Lake Phelps_068The Gems appeared to float In the air

Pocosin Lakes, Lake Phelps_067I found this gorgeous beaded necklace..

Guarded by a spider..

Pocosin Lakes, Lake Phelps_062But my favorite find was this amazing bauble

Pocosin Lakes, Lake Phelps_024It also had boardwalk reflections in it..

Pocosin Lakes, Lake Phelps_025I wanted to take this home..

Pocosin Lakes, Lake Phelps_027But I resisted the temptation..

and left the Gems to nature..
