Howdee all,

Remember that terrible Oil “spill” in the Gulf?

Do you think it is over and done with?

Do you think that animal, plant life have recovered?

As many of us get ready for the Holidays..and fun with family and friends..

Remember that.

Its not over..

Its just the beginning of knowing..

Of knowing what the cost will be..for the humans, birds, animals, plant life, sea life and myriads of other things effected by..Negligence.

A lovey visitor…new to our feeders here in Carthage, NC.

Hardly purple at all…more of a Raspberry red

There seem to be at least five pair…

here are a few…I took more photos of the males…

I should take more of the females as they are interesting too..but until then..

Isn't he beautiful..

So festive in his Santa colors..

Jeff, Sicksta,Balliecat and I will soon travel by car to CT. We will spend Christmas with my family…we also hope to have a belated Hanukah celebration with Jeff's family.

Baby its cold outside…Let me in!

Howdee all,

Burrrrrrrrrrrrrr….the past few days here in North Carolina have been unseasonably cold. My sicksta who has lived here for a while says that this has been January weather. I know my New England family and friends are also experiencing colder than normal temps.

My friends in Tucson boasted temps in the 80s!

How about the rest of you…is it colder or warmer than normal?…

I have a suggestion for all of you who are experiencing cold temps. If you want to stay warm when sleeping…Go buy Fleece Sheets…they are sooooooo soft and warm! Flannel sheets used to be my favorite..but Fleece are so much softer..and snuggly...… I also purchased the fluffiest and softest blanket ever from Costco…Home Goods has them too.

The only problem with this soft bedding is that you will never want to get out of bed. On the coldest day this week, Jeff stayed in bed all day…he brought his laptop into bed…his office was the soft fluffy nest of blankets…

Buyer beware…

So how cold was it this week?

Sooo..cold this little Brown-headed nuthatch wanted to come in and try out our fluffy bedding.

Weymouth Woods birding stroll

Howdee all,

This past Saturday Jeff and I took stroll to one of our favorite birding spots outside of my Sickstas yard, which in my opinion is very birdie. We drove about ten miles to Weymouth Woods.

It was early afternoon before we braved the coldish air…We are wimps these days and anything below 55 has us closeted away indoors seeking warmth.We did go out despite the chilly air…all bundled up in our thick fleece and down.

I don’t know the plant below..but I loved seeing the pink in the Long-needle pine forest.

This woods is famous for the declining population of the Red-cockaded Woodpecker..which we didn’t see this day…as we were out for a walk too…and didn’t want to spend the time searching the pines or waiting at the feeders..It was the type of birding day that if we heard birds, or saw movement we stopped, as we hiked the trail…but we didn’t go out of our way to find a bird. We know there are Bachmann's sparrows here..but didn’t bother to look…We get great views and songs from them here in the spring.

So…we walked the trail…and I saw these shrooms..Havent put and ID on them yet…Any ideas?

Looks like Orange Mock Oyster Mushroom..but not sure.We stood at this spot for a long time…this area dips down into the wet area…

Lots of Holly berries..which means lots of birds…especially Robins.We saw a few Pileated, Downy, and family of Red-headed Woodpeckers. We also heard and saw a few Fox sparrows..what a beautiful song.

After a few hours the sun was starting to go down and we were getting cold..

So we took the shortest trail back to our car.Below..young Long Needle Pine…Almost to the car…the sun lights up the distant grass..Time for a hot cup of tea!
